Listen To Your Audience

Your community will tell you what they need from you, so you should listen! Use social media to get a feel for the type of content your audience responds well to. Leverage that information to create email content and engage with your email subscribers.

When in doubt, just ask! Include a question on your sign up form asking what type of content your subscriber wants to receive. Use that information to issue tags and place them in segments that help you send them the right content (read more about tagging and segmenting in this blog post).

Get Personal

Email marketing is a great way to build relationships with current and potential customers. Getting personal with your subscribers allows them to connect with you on more than just transactions. It also helps you reinforce community values, which keeps subscribers coming back for more.

When I first started using email marketing, I’ll be honest. I had no idea what I was doing! It seemed simple, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to be consistent and see consistent results. Now email is the cornerstone of my business and I’ve developed a rhythm and style. Here are my biggest tips on how to upgrade your email marketing.

Create a Schedule and Stick to it.

If you plan your social media or website content, you should also plan your email marketing content.

And you don't have to write out your entire email ahead of time.  Narrowing down a topic, listing a few points to hit, and choosing a call to action is enough to get you started.

Scheduling marketing emails is a priority for me! That’s one of the reasons why I chose Convertkit. Because I can put my emails on autopilot, I have the freedom to focus on things I enjoy.

Learn Your Email Service Provider

There's no excuse for inconsistency with email marketing. The many tools and features within your email service provider make it easy. The key is taking the time to master them.

Take time on a weekly or monthly basis to learn something new about your email service provider. Test out new features with your email service provider often. Join your email service provider’s newsletter to get info about updates and new features. Attend workshops, conferences, and webinars offered by your email service provider.

Repurpose Content

You don't have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to content for email marketing. Rely on content you’ve published on other platforms to bolster your email content. Especially if that content is doing well! This is called repurposing content.

When you repurpose content, it’s such a time and energy saver! If you have a tweet that is getting good engagement, it may benefit you to take that same post and expand on it in an email. Repurposing content also helps to reinforce brand values and concepts across all platforms.

Promote Your List Often

The only way people will know about your email list is if you talk about it. You should be actively promoting your email list daily. That means posting on your social media pages, getting active and talking about it in groups, and asking current subscribers to forward your emails to their friends.

Promoting your email list passively is also an option and there are a few common ways to do this. One way is to include popup boxes or subscription banners on your website. Your website is real estate that you own, so you benefit from promoting your email list there as well.
